ACTIVITY TIME!
Time Capsule

A time capsule is a container that hold items from now (the present) that you are going to keep closed up and put away for the future.  You can decide if you want to keep your time capsule closed for 5 or 10 years.

  1. The first thing you need to do is choose the container that you are going to use.  This could really be any kind of container.  A shoebox or even a plastic tote would work.
  2. Decorate your time capsule in any way you want.  If you are using a clear container I would suggest covering it so you keep the items inside hidden until you reopen it.  Remember to put your name and the date you finished it somewhere on the outside of the container.
  3. Time capsule ideas.  You could put current pictures, art projects, writing, story of something that happened this year, newspaper clippings, even a note to your future self.
  4. Then put it away.  Don't peek inside until your supposed to.

WRITING TIME!
Publishing - We should have a finished personal narrative by now.  Here is where you get to publish your story.  Put on a nice cover.  Maybe you even want to hand stitch the book together.  I know my 3rd-4th graders have had practice with that.

WRITING TIME!
Writing a Closing.  We should be just about finished with our personal narrative.  How should the story end?

Even when you have finished writing your story, that doesn't mean you are finished.  There are still many things we need to do before we are truly at THE END.
Editing:  Are there places that we can change or fix things to make our story better?

ACTIVITY TIME!
Another important part of our week is finding a relative to interview.  This will help you understand your family history and where your family is from.  You can do this in person, on the phone, or a video call.  Maybe talk to more than one member of your family.

Here are some sample questions that you can ask.
  • What is your name?  Were you named after someone?
  • Tell me about your family?  How many brothers and sisters do you have?
  • Where were your parents born?
  • Did you know your grandparents?
  • What did you call your grandparents?
  • Tell me a funny story about one of your family members.
  • How are schools different today?
  • Tell me a story about when you were my age.
  • What was your favorite game when you were a child?
  • What books did you like to read?
  • What did you do for fun as a child?
  • Tell me another story about our family.

WRITING TIME!
Writing a draft.  Today we are working on a draft for our personal narrative.  Remember this is our practice copy.  We will likely change or add things.  Do not take to much time to worry about pictures, they will come later.

June 2 - All About You!

STORYTIME!
Dance at Grandpa's by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

CRAFT TIME!
Today we are going to make Picture Magnets.  Be sure to ask your parents if you can use some pictures before you cut them up.  Or you could draw your own pictures to turn into magnets.

Photo Magnets

What you will need:
  • printed copies of your photographs (or pictures that you have drawn)
  • scissors
  • large clear glass beads (the flat ones)
  • clear drying glue or modge podge
  • magnets
What you will do:
  1. Cut the photos so they will fit the size of your glass bead.
  2. Spread a small amount of glue or modge podge on the flat side of the bead.
  3. Press the photo onto the bead and set it aside to dry.
  4. When dry, put glue on the back of the picture to attach the magnet.  Let dry again.
Here I have some flat thin magnets or circle magnets.  These glass beads come in many colors.  I have blue, green and clear.  You can use any that you would like for your photo magnets.

WRITING TIME!
How is your personal narrative coming?  Today our video is talking about writing our introduction.  What is the best way to start our story?

Imagine Your Story Week 1

June 1st - All About You!

The first type of story we are going to play with is one closest to ourselves.  We are going to talk about our families and our own lives.

I have found several picture books that we will read this week that the author is writing about their own family.  This type of story is called a personal narrative.

STORYTIME!

The Baby Sister by Tomie dePaola (Be sure to watch for all of the old pictures at the beginning of the story.)

This week we are going to be working our Family Trees.  You can talk to your parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts.  They will be able to help you find the information that you need.  I will be showing you several different types of family trees that you can choose from.

I have been working on my family tree with my parents for many years now.  I loved to sit with my grandparents and listen to the stories that they told me.  I have even written some of those stories down, so I would not forget them.

Here are several files that you can have your parents help you download and print.

There are all sorts of ways that we can display our family tree.  I will be showing you several ways that you can see my family tree in my house.

CRAFT TIME!

For our craft this week you will be creating your own family tree.  Once you have finished your version please post it as a comment or have your parents send it to me and I will post it here on the blog.  I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Here are a couple of sample ideas for you to think about.  Think of the best ways to display the information you have.  Do you want it to be a 3-D tree like my photo tree?  Will you make a scrapbook of your information?  How about a painting?  Every one of our trees will look different.

WRITING TIME!

This week we will be writing a personal narrative.  This means it will be a true story of something that actually happened in our lives.  I have found a series of videos that we will be using to help us write our personal narratives this week.  I will post one or two of these videos for you to watch each day.  By Friday we should all have a personal narrative story finished and published  - Ready to share with the world!  It would be great if we could share our stories here.  Ella and I will be reading our stories for you on Friday.

This is the first video.  It is about getting our idea for our personal narrative.

Getting Ready!

Imagine Your Story

Our 2020 Summer Reading Program at Hampton Lutheran School is for children Pre-K through 6th grade.  The Summer Reading Program may look a little different this year.  We will start Monday, June 1.
Currently, we plan to do the program digitally, using this blog to post videos or read alouds and projects.

Come listen to a story and do some fun crafts and experiments with us.

The library at Hampton Lutheran School will not be open at this time.  If we later this summer are given the go ahead to start meeting there, we will transition it in school meetings.

Make a summer reading goal:  How many books can you read?  Lets keep track and find out just how much we can read this summer.

I will also be posting writing projects and STEAM activities for the older students (3rd - 6th graders).

We have lots of things planned.  Lets see how much fun we can have this summer.
